Gaz Coombes – Don’t Say It’s Over

Listening to Gaz, I am struck by the feeling that the meaning behind his songs is universal. It’s not just his opinion or truth, but somehow it resonates with our own experiences and truths. This feeling was particularly palpable on a Saturday night at the Electric Ballroom in Camden. The venue was packed, and the atmosphere was intimate, creating a sense of shared experience with those around me.

I found myself transported back 15 years ago to Shepherds Bush, London, in 2008. The stage was adorned with shiny red and green letters and four Christmas trees made of warm golden lights, creating a magical ambiance. Supergrass played all the songs I wanted to hear, from moving to Mary. As the last track of the encore, “Caught by the fuzz” filled the room, and I couldn’t help but feel caught up in the music.

As I said in the beginning, this kind of music is universal. Ah ay ya ya. Sometimes I am instead humming “I wanna make it. I wanna make it wit’ chu”.

Back to the present, even though the sound design of the night may not have been perfect (even while sitting 2 metres from the mixing desk), Gaz’s music was more than enough to make up for it. I am grateful to have had the opportunity to listen to his work. Thank you, Gaz, for sharing your talent with the world. It has always been a pleasure. Never say it’s over.
